Opera Lab Berlin is an
independent,
free-form ensemble

dedicated to creating

interdisciplinary music theatre

that is tightly bound to its

contemporary surroundings.

Opera Lab Berlin emcompasses everyone involved in our musical theatre world. At the heart of our work is the performer, there to entertain and engage an audience whilst also promoting and popularizing contemporary music through its fusion with contemporary theatre. By deliberately not restricting our modes of artistic production or representation, a genuine sense of worldliness can form the basis of our musical theatre. Contemporaneity means for us to be independent of the cultural zeitgeist; to have a self-critical awareness of reality. As our work develops both theatrically and musically, thematically and physically, Opera Lab Berlin can address the ever-broadening needs and desires of our surrounding environment. We are continually striving to provide an open door for all to our musical theatre experience.

One year ago Opera Lab Berlin launched ‘IM FELD’ [in the field] as a way of allowing us continually to test how we realise our concepts of musical theatre. A series that brings together a composer, a director, and a small ensemble in Berlin’s Acker Stadt Palast for one week, it provides an open space for the creation of a new experimental production where artistic creativity can meet open-minded, curious audiences. We are looking forward to further larger-scale productions that have already been planned for the coming years.
A laboratory for instrumental and vocal performances, the ensemble breaks down traditional musical and theatrical forms: distilling, filtering, boiling, heating, mixing, crystallizing, freezing, melting, and then recombining all possible genres until something new has been found. We aim to premiere new musical theatre works alongside unique versions of pre-existing contemporary repertoire. The cornerstone of our ensemble is equality amongst all artists involved. Opera Lab Berlin is its own producer and curator, a platform for the production and dissemination of new music theatre with cooperative and collective authorship.
